Recover Data from a Corrupted MS SQL (.BAK) Backup

Incident Response & Remediation Procedure: Corruption of an MS SQL Backup in .BAK Format

1. Main Causes of Data Unavailability

In the event of a restore failure or when an MS SQL .BAK backup cannot be mounted, the causes generally fall into two categories:

  • Network instability (Logical corruption): Brief network outages, packet loss, or interrupted data flows during write/replication operations, compromising the integrity of data blocks.
  • Hardware failures (Physical corruption): Bad sectors on the target storage, RAID controller failures, or corruption of the host file system (NTFS/ReFS/XFS).

2. Restore Capabilities & MS SQL .BAK Data Integration

Our infrastructure incorporates strict protocols for validating and restoring critical environments:

  • Integrity verification: Use of native verification mechanisms (checksums) to identify and isolate corrupted blocks.
  • MS SQL .BAK data integration: Granular restoration, extraction of configuration files, and mounting of backup points through dedicated proxies to bypass damaged index files.

3. Tools & Evolution of the Recoveo Technical Stack

To handle severe corruption cases, our team uses specific in-house tools developed to overcome the limitations of standard solutions:

ToolVersion / InfrastructureTechnical Focus & Usage
Backup Recovery2019 StackFirst generation. Focused on index reconstruction and restoring the structural integrity of MS SQL .BAK files.
Backup Extractor2026 Stack (Current)Advanced version. Enables raw data extraction directly from corrupted volumes, optimizing RTO when dealing with new types of incidents.

⚠️ Warning: Before attempting any remediation, make sure to create a bit-for-bit copy (snapshot or clone) of the affected repository to preserve the original source data.

Two Main Backup Recovery Methods:
In-Lab or Remote

Our 10 Gb/s connection allows us to respond quickly and efficiently when transferring data for remote recovery. Security is our priority: we exclusively use the SFTP protocol for data transfers. File integrity is verified upon receipt, ensuring that the transferred files are 100% identical to the originals.

In-Lab Database Recovery

Most of our data recovery operations are still carried out in our laboratories. The main advantage is that working directly with physical servers provides us with more recovery options than working solely with uploaded files. In-lab recovery is essential in cases involving data deletion, where data has actually been erased.

Remote Database Recovery

Remote recovery is becoming increasingly common in our operations. The main advantage is that it does not require the physical transportation of servers or drives, reducing logistics costs and eliminating the risk of damage during transit. There are also no customs-related issues to consider. Your server can remain online if other services are still running on it.

Data Recovery from a Corrupted, Unusable MS SQL .BAK Backup in Paris, France

An MS SQL BAK Backup That Could No Longer Be Restored
An SME based in Paris, France, contacted us through our website www.recoveo.com after a restore attempt failed on an MS SQL BAK backup that had become unusable. The client was no longer able to restore the backup. The initial assumption was that the backup file had become corrupted.

Transfer of the Corrupted Backup via FTP
From the initial contact, our specialist team carried out a complete assessment of the situation with the client. During this stage, the Paris-based company informed us that the affected file was an MS SQL backup in .bak format, with a total size of approximately 20 GB. To facilitate the transfer of the backup, our team created a unique FTP link allowing the client to send us the entire backup. The client also provided us with the name of the affected file: x3v12_backup_2025_07_02_230001_5310230.bak

Error Message When Opening the Backup
After successfully receiving the .BAK backup, one of our RECOVEO engineers first attempted to open and restore it using the standard method. The software displayed an error message confirming that the backup could no longer be restored using conventional methods.

Technical Analysis and Data Reconstruction
The case was then assigned to our R&D engineering team to determine the exact nature of the issue. Initial checks revealed that some of the data blocks were unreadable. More specifically, approximately 19% of the analyzed segments contained incomplete structures & data blocks. Based on this mapping, our R&D team was initially able to isolate the readable blocks. A second discussion was then held with the client to share the initial findings and identify ways to improve the overall data recovery success rate. Following this discussion, the client provided us with an additional data source to supplement the analysis: a production virtual machine, which was also corrupted. After cross-analyzing the different available sources and using specialized equipment, our R&D engineering team confirmed the following results to the client:

Result: 92% of the priority files were successfully recovered and validated.
Initial volume analyzed: 17 GB Recoverable data volume: 640 GB, representing an overall recovery rate of 87% of the initial volume.

Delivery and Validation
To ensure reliable validation, the recovered database files were mounted on a secure SQL Server environment made available to the client. This allowed the client to review the recovered files, verify their contents, and validate the priority data before final delivery. The recovered data was delivered within 24 hours, allowing the client to quickly resume business operations.
