Incident Response & Remediation Procedure: Iperius Backup Corruption
1. Main Causes of Data Unavailability
In the event of a restore failure or when an Iperius backup restore point cannot be mounted, the causes generally fall into two categories:- Network instability (Logical corruption): Brief network outages, packet loss, or interrupted data flows during write/replication operations, compromising the integrity of data blocks.
- Hardware failures (Physical corruption): Bad sectors on the target storage, RAID controller failures, or corruption of the host file system (NTFS/ReFS/XFS).
2. Restore Capabilities & Iperius Backup Integration
Our infrastructure incorporates strict protocols for validating and restoring critical environments:- Integrity verification: Use of native verification mechanisms (checksums) to identify and isolate corrupted blocks.
- Iperius integration: Granular restoration, extraction of configuration files, and mounting of restore points through dedicated proxies to bypass damaged index files.
3. Tools & Evolution of the Recoveo Technical Stack
To handle severe corruption cases, our team uses specific in-house tools developed to overcome the limitations of standard solutions:| Tool | Version / Infrastructure | Technical Focus & Usage |
| Backup Recovery | 2019 Stack | First generation. Focused on index reconstruction and restoring the structural integrity of Iperius backup files. |
| Backup Extractor | 2026 Stack (Current) | Advanced version. Enables raw data extraction directly from corrupted volumes, optimizing RTO when dealing with new types of incidents. |
Two Main Backup Recovery Methods:
In-Lab or Remote
In-Lab Database Recovery
Most of our data recovery operations are still carried out in our laboratories. The main advantage is that working directly with physical servers provides us with more recovery options than working solely with uploaded files. In-lab recovery is essential in cases involving data deletion, where data has actually been erased.
Remote Database Recovery
Remote recovery is becoming increasingly common in our operations. The main advantage is that it does not require the physical transportation of servers or drives, reducing logistics costs and eliminating the risk of damage during transit. There are also no customs-related issues to consider. Your server can remain online if other services are still running on it.
Iperius Backup Recovery Process
Extracting the maximum amount of data for every client: that is our mission. Each database presents a unique challenge requiring a tailored approach, where we consistently push beyond the limitations of standard software. Powered by high-performance systems, we process your data in record time.
Assessment
Definition of the technical scope and recovery priorities during a technical phone consultation.
The first step toward effective data recovery.
Diagnosis
Your storage media are handled by our specialists. We systematically create a clone to preserve the original evidence in case an investigation is required.
Recovery
Extraction of priority data, integrity testing, and creation of a list of recovered files. Then, secure restoration and resumption of business operations.

Data Recovery from a Corrupted, Unusable Iperius Backup in Marseille, France
An Iperius Backup That Could No Longer Be Restored
An SME based in Marseille, France, contacted us through our website www.recoveo.com after a restore attempt failed on an Iperius backup that had become unusable. The client was no longer able to restore the backup. The initial assumption was that the backup file had become corrupted.
Transfer of the Corrupted Backup
From the initial contact, our specialist team carried out a complete assessment of the situation with the client. During this stage, the Marseille-based company informed us that the affected Iperius backup contained a database in .ibd format, named 2000.ibd, with a total size of approximately 1.5 TB. Following our initial discussion, the client confirmed that a hard drive containing the data would be physically shipped to our laboratory.
Error Message When Opening the Backup
After successfully receiving the Iperius backup, one of our RECOVEO engineers first attempted to open and restore it using the conventional method. The software displayed an error message confirming that the backup could no longer be restored using standard recovery methods.
Technical Analysis and Data Reconstruction
The case was then assigned to our R&D engineering team to determine the exact nature of the issue. Initial checks revealed that some of the data blocks were unreadable. More specifically, approximately 8% of the analyzed segments contained incomplete structures & data blocks. Based on this mapping, our R&D team was initially able to isolate the readable blocks. A second discussion was then held with the client to share the initial findings and identify ways to improve the overall data recovery success rate. Following this discussion, the client provided us with an additional data source to supplement the analysis: an older backup, which was also corrupted. After cross-analyzing the different available sources and using specialized equipment, our R&D engineering team confirmed the following results to the client:
Result: 98% of the priority files were successfully recovered and validated.
Initial volume analyzed: 1.5 TB
Recoverable data volume: 1.2 TB, representing an overall recovery rate of 80% of the total hard drive capacity.
Validation and Delivery To facilitate data validation, the recovered database was mounted on a secure SQL Server environment made available to the client. This allowed the Marseille-based client to review the recovered files and verify their contents. Following client validation, the recovered data was copied onto an external hard drive and securely delivered within 48 hours. This enabled the client to quickly and confidently resume business operations.
