Procédure d'incident & Remédiation : Corruption d'une sauvegarde Proxmox VE
1. Main Causes of Data Unavailability
In the event of a restore failure or inability to mount a Proxmox VE backup point, the causes generally fall into two categories:
- Network instability (Logical corruption): Brief network outages, packet loss, or interrupted data flows during write/replication operations, compromising the integrity of data blocks.
- Hardware failures (Physical corruption): Bad sectors on the target storage, RAID controller failures, or corruption of the host file system (NTFS/ReFS/XFS).
2. Recovery Capabilities & Proxmox VE Backup Integration
Our infrastructure incorporates strict protocols to validate and restore critical environments:
- Integrity verification: Use of native verification mechanisms (checksums) to identify and isolate corrupted blocks.
- Proxmox VE integration: Granular recovery, extraction of configuration files, and mounting of backup points through dedicated proxies to bypass damaged index files.
3. Tools & Evolution of the Recoveo Technical Stack
To handle severe corruption cases, our team uses specific in-house tools developed to overcome the limitations of standard recovery solutions:
| Tool | Version / Infrastructure | Technical Focus & Use |
| Backup Recovery | 2019 Stack | First generation. Focused on index reconstruction and restoring the structural integrity of Proxmox VE backup files. |
| Backup Extractor | 2026 Stack (Current) | Advanced version. Enables raw data extraction directly from corrupted volumes, optimizing RTO when dealing with new types of incidents. |
⚠️ Warning: Before attempting any remediation, make sure to create a bit-for-bit copy (snapshot or clone) of the affected repository to preserve the original source data.
Two Main Backup Recovery Methods:
In-Lab or Remote
In-Lab Database Recovery
Most of our data recovery operations are still carried out in our laboratories. The main advantage is that physical servers provide us with more recovery options than uploaded files alone. In-lab recovery is essential in cases involving data deletion, where data has actually been erased.
Remote Database Recovery
Remote recovery is becoming increasingly common in our operations. The main advantage is that it does not require the physical transportation of servers or drives, reducing logistics costs and eliminating the risk of damage during transit. There are also no customs-related issues to consider. Your server can remain online if services are still running on it.

Data Recovery from a Corrupted and Unusable Proxmox VE Backup in Bordeaux, France
A Proxmox VE Backup That Could No Longer Be Restored
An SME based in Bordeaux, France, contacted us through our website www.recoveo.com after a Proxmox VE backup became unusable and could no longer be restored. The client was unable to restore the backup, and the initial assumption was that the backup file had become corrupted.
Transfer of the Corrupted Backup via FTP
From the initial contact, our team of specialists carried out a complete assessment of the situation with the client. During this stage, the Bordeaux-based company informed us that the affected backup was a Proxmox VE backup in .vma.zst format, with a total size of approximately 2.2 TB. To facilitate the transfer, our team created a unique FTP link allowing the client to send us the entire backup. The client also provided us with the name of the affected file: vzdump-qemu-101-2026_04_15-09_58_23.vma.zst
Error Message When Opening the Backup
After successfully receiving the Proxmox VE backup, one of our RECOVEO engineers first attempted to open the backup using a standard method, without success. The software displayed an error message confirming that the backup could no longer be accessed using conventional restoration methods.
Technical Analysis and Data Reconstruction
The analysis was assigned to our R&D engineering team to determine the exact nature of the issue. Initial checks revealed that part of the data blocks was unreadable. More specifically, approximately 14% of the analyzed segments contained incomplete structures & data blocks. Based on this mapping, our R&D team first succeeded in isolating the readable blocks. A second discussion was then held with the client to share the initial findings and identify ways to improve the overall data recovery success rate. Following this discussion, the client provided us with two additional data sources: an older backup and a production virtual machine, which was also corrupted, to supplement our analysis. After cross-analyzing the different available data sources and using specialized equipment, our R&D engineering team confirmed the following results to the client:
Result: 92% of the priority files were recovered and validated
Initial volume analyzed: 2.2 TB
Recoverable volume restored: 1.7 TB, representing an overall recovery rate of 77% of the initial volume
Delivery and Validation
To ensure reliable validation, the recovered database files were mounted on a secure SQL Server environment and made available to the client for quick and efficient review. This allowed the Bordeaux-based client to review the recovered files, verify their contents, and validate the priority data before final delivery. Following final validation by the client, the recovered data was transferred via FTP for fast and secure delivery. The entire data recovery process took only 48 hours, allowing the client to quickly resume business operations.
